Paris is a city that rewards the unplanned. While guidebooks, TikToks and influencers list must-see attractions and perfect itineraries, the real magic of Paris is found when you let go of the schedule and simply wander.

The best things to do in Paris? Put away the checklist, step out onto the streets, and let the city reveal itself to you.

Find Hidden Gems While Strolling Through Paris

Paris is a city made for walking. Every arrondissement has its own character, and the joy is in discovering what’s around the next corner. Or, perhaps above you, as you look up to admire the buildings. You are likely to stumble upon a hidden courtyard, elegant Haussmannian boulevards, and narrow side streets filled with charm. The beauty of Paris is in these small, unexpected details. Ornate doorways, ivy-covered façades, small shops selling earrings, books, or vintage clothing. And – wherever you go; the scent of fresh pastries wafting from a nearby boulangerie or patisserie.

The best way to explore is by choosing a direction and seeing where the streets take you. Wander through Le Marais for its mix of old and new, or get lost in the Latin Quarter’s winding paths. Stop by a charming boutique, admire the architecture, and soak in the vibrant atmosphere. The true essence of Paris is often found in these unassuming corners of the city.

Step Into Historic Buildings and Exhibitions

Wandering without an agenda allows you to say “yes” to spontaneous discoveries. Many historical buildings, churches, and exhibitions have open doors inviting you in. You may find yourself stepping into a grand yet quiet church, where candlelight flickers against ancient stone walls. Or, an art gallery showcasing an artist you’ve never heard of but suddenly love. Some days, museums offer free entry, such as Musée des Archives in Le Marais, that you can see a glimpse from in the left-hand image below.

You might just happen to drop into an exhibition that becomes the highlight of your trip – as I did a few months ago when I discovered La Bourse de Commerce and its Pinault Collection, which you can see in the mid and right-hand image below. The funny thing (or a bit embarrassing?) is that I lived only a few blocks away in the Montorgueil neighbourhood, which I always visit several times whenever I am in Paris.

Walking without a plan allows you to take full advantage of the unexpected cultural opportunities Paris has to offer. You may enter a former aristocratic mansion turned museum, or a small contemporary art gallery hidden behind an unmarked door.

Relax in Parisian Parks and Experience Local Life

One of the most Parisian things you can do is to simply sit and observe. Find a green metal chair in the Jardin du Luxembourg and watch as Parisians go about their day—elderly men playing pétanque, children sailing toy boats in the fountain, students reading under the trees. Or grab a seat at a sidewalk terrace, order a café crème in the morning or an apéro in the afternoon. Take in the rhythm of the city. There is no rush. In Paris, people-watching is an art form.

In addition to Jardin du Luxembourg, consider visiting Parc des Buttes-Chaumont (unless your Paris trip is quite short, this is a little detour), a picturesque park with rolling hills and scenic viewpoints. Take a book, have a picnic, or simply close your eyes and listen to the sounds of the city. Or join the locals as they go for a run. Read more about the parks of Paris in my recent post.

Follow Your Senses to Discover Parisian Delights

Let your senses guide you. If you smell something delicious, follow the scent—it might lead you to a tiny pâtisserie with the best éclair you’ve ever had. Hear the sound of an accordion? You might have stumbled upon a street performance near the Seine. See a charming bookstore? Step inside, browse the shelves, and maybe even find an old book with a hand-written dedication from decades past.

In my opinion, many of the best local experiences come from spontaneous choices. Whether it’s a hidden fromagerie offering exquisite cheeses or a family-run bistro with a daily-changing menu, letting your senses guide you leads to authentic, memorable encounters. Embrace the culinary surprises of the city, from artisanal chocolates to a local market bursting with fresh produce.

Experience Paris like a local – Savor every Moment

Wandering allows you to experience Paris the way Parisians do. Instead of rushing from monument to monument, take the time to embrace the city’s slower moments. Sit by the river, stroll through a quiet square, or find a cozy bistro and linger over a glass of wine. In the end, these unscripted experiences will become your most cherished memories of Paris.

The true Parisian way of life is about savoring the present moment—whether it’s through meaningful conversations, leisurely meals, or simply enjoying the city’s rhythm. Spend an afternoon in a lesser-known neighborhood, chat with locals, and enjoy the city without feeling pressured to check off tourist spots. These small, unplanned joys will be the moments that stay with you long after you leave.

So, if you’re planning a trip to Paris, plan less. Walk more. Let the city surprise you. That’s where the true magic of Paris lies.
